High Priestess

High Priestess

Nina Simone’s music has always seduced my senses, especially when I listen to her sing as if she is painting, lyrically with her voice...!I can see grand mamma on the porch just a rockin’...watching all the people go bye, oh my...”. I can feel the Memphis sun on my neck, and smell the sweet oleander in the air. So hypnotic are her lyrics, filled with both Southern truth and venom...as I’m reminded of her singing "Mississippi Goddamn” all over again, affirming its relevance in these times of so called colorblindness.

I wanted to create and paint a strong...powerful image of Nina. Her face mirror the complexity of the women she so poignantly sings about in her "Four Women” song. I wanted to marry my pastel chalk, colored pencils and acrylics to create an almost Monochromatic backdrop of the Eiffel Tower while elevating the earthy skin tones and embroidered gold swirls of Nina's "Priestess” wardrobe.

Medium: Acrylics
